    Robert Wynne was born in 1558/59 in Shrewsbury, Co. Shropshire, England. He married Francis Wattmer ca 1590 in England. Frances was born in 1565 in Stottesdon, Co. Shropshire, England, the daughter of William Watmoughe/Wattmore and Margaret Sparkes/Parkes. Robert was a Woolen draper. He was a apprentice to John Rose and released from his indenture in 1590. Six years later Robert was the Mayor of Canterbury, England, and held that office from 1596-1599. He and Frances died of the Plague within 2 days of each other. Their children were disbursed into other families. Robert died on 06 Sept/Oct 1609 and Frances died on 08 Sept 1609, both in Canterbury, Co. Kent, England. They both were buried at St. George's Parish, Canterbury, Co. Kent, England. Robert Wynne, born 1558 in Salop (now known as Shrewsbury) England. (according to Gwyneth Daniel from the UK - who wrote in January of 2005: Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire. Salop is an old form of Shropshire, and Shropshire is a County in its own right.)

 

Francis' father William Wattmer took the Wynne children to a house outside the city and procured a nurse for them. It was William who raised the children.

Martha was the granddaughter of John Coppin, born in 1530 and a member of British Parliament 20 May 1581 and his wife Mary Denne. The Denne family is descended from the Vikings who invaded Normandy and who settled part of France then moved north to England, Scotland and Wales. Peter Wynne and Martha Coppin had two children: 1) Col. Robert Wynne, and 2) Sarah Wynne. Peter was freed from apprenticeship in 1626. Peter Wynne died on 30 May 1638 in Canterbury, County Kent, England.

...3   Colonel Robert Wynne Born:   28 Dec 1622  St. Dunstans, Canterbury, Kent, Eng  Died:  1 Jul 1675  or August 16, 1678 Jordan's Parish, Charles City Co., VA   Buried: Charles City, Virginia,  Jordan’s Par Ch m. Mary Poythress (widow) Colonel Robert Wynne was the ancestor of all the Marion County, Tennessee Wynne's. He migrated to the Virginia Colony in 1655. He was married in 1657 to Mary Frances (Sloman) Poythress by whom he had four children. Colonel Robert Wynne was speaker of the House of Burgesses and served longer than any man in Virginia's history, from 13 March 1661 to 1675. Robert died on 8 October 1675. His will, dated 1 July 1675 and proved 15 August 1678 at Jordans Parish or Charles City (now Prince George County) shows an estate in Canterbury, England of two houses and a farm, in addition to his 600-acre Virginia estate south of the James River.

 2.iii. Major Joshua Wynne,  youngest son of Colonel Robert Wynne, born 1659-1662 in Charles City Co., Virginia.  He married twice.  He married first in 1704 to  Mary Jones. Mary was born: 1668 in Charles City Co., Virginia, the daughter of Captain Peter Jones and Margaret Wood. Joshua Wynne and Robert Malone (husband of his niece Mary Wynne Malone) were paid bounty of 200 pounds to kill wolves. Joshua was also an Indian interpreter. He inherited his father Robert's plantation. He was a Justice in Charles City Co., VA, and also sheriff of Prince George Co., Virginia.  Mary died ca 1709 in Henrico Co., Virginia.  Mary and her family were mentioned in the Will of her mother Margaret Wood Jones Cocke. Joshua was born in Charles City, Virginia in 1660. He was married to Mary Jones, daughter of Captain Peter Jones and wife Margaret (Wood) Jones, daughter of the eminent Major General Abraham Wood, head of Virginia's fur trade under Royal Governor Sir William Berkley. Joshua was overseer of the Berkley plantation during Bacon's Rebellion, was a member of the Governor's Council, and a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. After building Fort Henry in 1646, he and three other Virginians, two servants and a guide explored what someday would become Tennessee and Kentucky, and being the first Englishmen to set foot there. After this, Joshua lived in Prince George County, Virginia. On 29 March 1715 Major Joshua Wynne was shot and killed by Saponey Indians because one of Joshua's servants had killed one of the Indian's "great" men.

 

Upon trial of the Indian, they pleaded that the Wynne's were the aggressors and that they never rest without revenge. The Indians said that they and the Wynne's were then equal, each having lost a great man. To avoid more bloodshed the Indian was pardoned. Joshua was an Indian interpreter and was said to be a fearless adventurer. He was a Justice in Charles City County, Virginia as well as Sheriff of Prince George County, Virginia.

 

After the death of his wife Mary, Joshua married Frances (Anderson) Herbert Cocke, widow of Thomas Cocke.  Her father was John Anderson.  Joshua was killed by Indians in revenge after his servant killed one of their "Great Men". Joshua died in Nov of 1715 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia.

6.ii Robert Whitley Wynne b. 15 Mar 1789 m. Mary Crabtree, dau of Josiah and Rebecca Smith Crabtree Robert Whitley Wynn and Mary Crabtree. , was born about 1788 in Tazewell County, Virginia. He was a popular Methodist Clergyman and a prosperous farmer near Dryden, Virginia. Mary Crabtree, whom Robert married 19 May 1825, was born about 1794 in Washington County, Virginia. The 1850 census(2) of Lee County, Virginia, lists three of their children still at home, William, William's younger sister Clarinda born about 1836 and younger brother Robert, born about 1839. In the 1860 census(3), Robert's household included 18 year old servant Catharine Wilson and Mary Crabtree Wynn's mother, Rebecca Crabtree, age 85, widow of Josiah Crabtree, as well as William's wife Eliza (aka Louisa). (Robert died near Dryden 6 Dec 1873 and Mary 24 Apr 1887) not one of Robert and Mary's sons survived them

7.ii. Robert Wynn abt 1839 served in the 64th Virginia, in Company A, and was captured at Cumberland Gap on 9 Sep 1863. Like most of the captured 64th Virginia, Robert was sent to Camp Douglas on 24 Sep 1863 where he was held until transferred to Point Lookout 21 Feb 1865 for exchange. On the 4th of March 1865, Robert was in Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, where he died five days later. He is buried there in Oakwood Cemetery.

On 17 Jan 1860, in Lee County, Virginia, he married Eliza Flanary, daughter of Elkanah and Nancy Flanary.(1) Lee County Death Records give the cause of death as consumption but military records state he died of typhoid fever and are more likely correct. William was survived by ; his wife Eliza who died 6 May 1881; his daughter
